Linux Lite 起始于 2013 年，在当时发布了基于 Ubuntu 的 Linux Lite 1.0.0 ，并以“ Amethyst ”作为其 codename 。它最初的开发和设计是为了吸引 Windows 用户使用基于 Linux 的操作系统，以消除 Linux 很难使用的不正确观念。

Linux Lite 的目标是通过提供 Windows 计算机可用的同样软件的方式，给 Windows 用户带来熟悉感。其包含 Firefox 、 Mozilla Thunderbird 、 VLC Media Player 、 GIMP 及 LibreOffice 等软件，也另外提供 Chromium 、 Dropbox 、 Kodi 、 Skype 、 Spotify 、 Steam 、 TeamViewer 、 Tor 及 VirtualBox 等常见软件。
