Li Baodong Meets with Personal Envoy of the ICRC President

On December 13th, Secretary General Li Baodong of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) met with Mr. Balthasar Staehelin, Personal Envoy of the President to China, Head of Delegation for East Asia, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Secretary General Li Baodong spoke highly of ICRC’s impartial and independent role as well as contributions to world peace and stability. He extended his appreciation to ICRC’s relentless effort in carrying out the Geneva Conventions and humanitarian actions in armed conflicts. The BFA would like to work together with ICRC to bring the world’s attention back to development, he said. The two sides could step up cooperation in areas such as economic security, poverty reduction, and youth training.

Mr. Staehelin thanked SG Li Baodong for his hospitality and fruitful meeting with ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger during her visit to China this September. He noted next year marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions. ICRC would like to call on, collectively with the Forum, the international community to refresh the spirit of the conventions and together further international humanitarian cause.
